TerraTech Legion Stars Guide: How to Get More Stars and Unlock Worlds
Learn how TerraTech Legion stars work, why you may be stuck after Dustbowl, how the 48-star grid is structured, and how to unlock more worlds and difficulties.
If you cleared Dustbowl Easy and only got one star, TerraTech Legion is probably not bugged.
The game does not treat stars as a simple “beat the map once” checklist. Stars are tied to who cleared the planet, which planet they cleared, and which difficulty they cleared.
The full star grid is:
- 4 planets × 3 difficulties × 4 characters = 48 stars
That is the key to understanding why the next world, next difficulty, or next character can stay locked even after you successfully finish a run.

Fast Answer
| Problem | Answer |
|---|---|
| I cleared Dustbowl but only got one star. | You cleared one character + planet + difficulty combination. That is only one star slot. |
| How do I get more stars? | Clear new combinations: different character, different planet, or different unlocked difficulty. |
| Do I need to replay planets with other characters? | Yes, if you want those character-specific stars. |
| Why is the next difficulty locked? | Higher threat levels require broader star progress, not just one Dustbowl clear. |
| What are the four planets? | Dustbowl, Rotwater Basin, Icebound Hollow, and Magma Hellscape. |
| What is the total star count? | 48 stars. |
How Stars Work
Stars are the main progression gate in TerraTech Legion. They unlock things such as characters, planets, and later access requirements.
The most important rule is:
One star usually represents one character clearing one planet on one difficulty.
| Clear combination | Star logic |
|---|---|
| Mikela clears Dustbowl Easy | Mikela gets the Dustbowl Easy clear. |
| Jean-Pierre clears Dustbowl Easy | This is a different star from Mikela’s clear. |
| Sam clears Rotwater Basin Easy | This is a Sam-specific clear for that planet and difficulty. |
| Mikela clears Dustbowl Medium | This is separate from Mikela’s Dustbowl Easy clear. |
This is why the game pushes you to try different characters. You are not meant to earn every early star by repeating the same exact run with the same prospector.
The 48-Star Grid
The star grid has four planets, three difficulty levels, and four characters.
| Planet | Easy | Medium | Hard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dustbowl | 4 character stars | 4 character stars | 4 character stars |
| Rotwater Basin | 4 character stars | 4 character stars | 4 character stars |
| Icebound Hollow | 4 character stars | 4 character stars | 4 character stars |
| Magma Hellscape | 4 character stars | 4 character stars | 4 character stars |
You do not need to memorize the grid. You just need to understand the pattern:
If a planet still has stars available, check which character and difficulty you have not cleared it with.
Why You Are Stuck After Dustbowl
Many players finish Dustbowl Easy, return to the map, and think the game has stopped giving progression.
Usually, the problem is one of these.
| What happened | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| You got only one star. | You cleared one character + planet + difficulty combination. | Clear another available combination. |
| A difficulty says it needs more stars. | The difficulty gate expects broader progression. | Keep clearing available Easy content. |
| You unlocked a character but not a new difficulty. | Character unlocks and difficulty unlocks are separate gates. | Check the map requirement, not just the character screen. |
| You repeated the same run and got no obvious progress. | Repeating an already-cleared combination may not give a new star. | Change character, planet, or difficulty. |
| The next area still needs two or more stars. | You have not filled enough of the early grid. | Look for two new clear combinations. |

The best way to avoid this confusion is to stop thinking of Dustbowl as “done” after one run. It may be done for that character on that difficulty, but not for the entire star grid.
What to Do If You Need More Stars
When a world, difficulty, or character requires more stars, do not grind the exact same clear again. Look for a new clear slot.
Use this order:
- Check which characters have already cleared Dustbowl Easy.
- Clear Dustbowl Easy with a different unlocked character if you have not done so.
- Check whether Rotwater Basin, Icebound Hollow, or another Easy planet is available.
- Clear a different available Easy planet with your safest character.
- Avoid repeating a character + planet + difficulty clear you already completed.
- If a character feels weak, simplify the build plan rather than abandoning that star forever.
The better thought is not “I need to grind harder.”
The better thought is:
I need a new character, planet, or difficulty combination.
When Do Medium and Hard Unlock?
Do not expect Medium or Hard to unlock after one Dustbowl Easy clear.
For early progression, the safer rule is:
Clear the available planets on Easy first, then return to higher threat levels once the game opens those gates.
The difficulty path is broader than one planet. If you are stuck on a requirement such as “requires more stars,” your next move is usually not to grind the same clear. It is to find another available Easy clear or another character clear.

Character Unlocks and Star Progress
Unlocking a new character does more than give you a different vehicle. It also opens new star opportunities, because stars are tied to character + planet + difficulty clears.
Mikela is your starting character. Jean-Pierre, Sam, and Cepheid are unlockable characters, and each one adds another set of possible planet clears once unlocked.
Public achievement data confirms unlock achievements for Jean-Pierre, Sam, and Cepheid, but the exact in-game star requirement should still be verified on your current version’s character screen before publishing a fixed number.
| Character | Unlock timing | Star progress value | Difficulty note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mikela Craft | Starting character | Your safest first clears. | Best first pick thanks to stun and extra rerolls. |
| Jean-Pierre Grandier | Very early unlock, often after the first Dustbowl progress. | Adds a tank / ram route for early extra stars. | Strong but slower; better if you like close-range impact builds. |
| Sam Ashida | Mid-game unlock after more early planet progress. | Adds a speed / precision route for more stars. | Powerful, but needs phase timing, grip, and cleaner driving. |
| Cepheid Swan | Late unlock compared with the others. | Adds the final character lane for the 48-star grid. | Hardest for beginners because hover and plasma trail damage require planned movement. |
| Jean-Pierre Grandier | Very early unlock; often appears after the first few Dustbowl stars. | Adds a tank / ram route for early extra stars. | Strong but slower; better if you like close-range impact builds. |
| Sam Ashida | Mid-game unlock; commonly reached after pushing into Rotwater Basin progress. | Adds a speed / precision route for more stars. | Powerful, but needs phase timing, grip, and cleaner driving. |
| Cepheid Swan | Later unlock; usually around the point where you are pushing deeper planets and broader star totals. | Adds the final character lane for the 48-star grid. | Hardest for beginners because hover and plasma trail damage require planned movement. |
For searchers trying to unlock a specific character: Jean-Pierre is the earliest unlock, Sam is a mid-game unlock, and Cepheid is the latest of the four characters. The exact star requirement can vary by version or should be checked directly on the in-game character screen.
Once a character is unlocked, do not treat them as optional flavor only. Each new character gives you more possible star clears across the same planets and difficulties.
If you only play your favorite character, you will slow down your star progress. If you rotate characters, you fill the grid faster and unlock more of the game.
Planet Objectives and Mission Cards
A star clear is not only about surviving until enemies stop spawning. Planet objectives can vary, and the current mission card should always be checked before you launch.
The important rule is:
Read the mission card first, then build and route around that objective.
For example:
| If the mission card emphasizes… | Your run should prioritize… |
|---|---|
| Boss completion | Focused damage, survivability, and enough mobility to handle the boss arena. |
| Level progress | XP collection, magnets, safe farming routes, and high-value POIs. |
| Base or structure objectives | Early damage spikes, explosives, range, repair, and an escape path. |
| Character-specific challenges | A build that fits that character instead of copying your Mikela setup. |
Do not assume every planet asks for the same thing. Dustbowl, Rotwater Basin, Icebound Hollow, and Magma Hellscape can all pressure different parts of your build.
Contracts vs Stars
Contracts are useful, but they are not the same as the 48-star grid.
Treat contracts as bonus progression or side objectives unless the current screen explicitly ties them to the thing you are trying to unlock. Stars come from planet, difficulty, and character clear progress. Contracts can still be worth doing when they line up with your run, but do not chase a contract if it causes you to miss the star objective.
Simple rule:
Do the contract if it supports the clear. Ignore it if it risks the clear.
Common Star Progression Mistakes
Mistake 1: Repeating the same clear
If you already cleared Dustbowl Easy with Mikela, doing that exact combination again is usually not the fastest way to earn a new star.
Change at least one part of the combination:
- character
- planet
- difficulty
Mistake 2: Ignoring the mission card
Do not treat every run as “just survive.” If the mission asks for boss kill, level progress, or base encounters, route around that objective.
Mistake 3: Trying to force Medium too early
Medium and Hard are not the first goal. Early on, your job is to fill the Easy path and unlock more options.
Mistake 4: Refusing to switch characters
You may prefer Mikela, but the star grid rewards character rotation. Even if Jean-Pierre or Sam feels awkward at first, those clears matter.
Mistake 5: Not checking the map after each run
The post-run screen and map requirements tell you what changed. Check them before launching another run.
