Quick Summary Table
Wow, wow, wow! Still in a rush? Don’t worry about it! Here’s the only rule you need to remember and digest—this is the bible of Balatro:
| Position | Jokers | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Left | +Chips (e.g., Blue Joker, Stuntman) | Maximizes base chips early |
| Middle | +Mult (e.g., Popcorn, Gros Michel) | Boosts the chip total before multiplication |
| Right | X Mult (e.g., Cavendish, Vampire) | Multiplies the final total for maximum scaling |
Read the Board: What You Need to Know First
Before arranging your Jokers, make sure you identify the right types:
- Identify your “+Chips” Jokers (Text says “+Chips”)
- Identify your “+Mult” Jokers (Text says “+Mult”)
- Identify your “X Mult” Jokers (Text says “X Mult” or “Times Mult”)
- Open the Balatro Calculator (Test your hand’s setup to avoid mistakes before playing!)
The Execution: Mastering the Joker Order
Step 1: The Math Logic (The Proof)
Here’s the critical insight you need to understand: Balatro processes Jokers strictly left to right. This means the earlier a Joker is placed, the earlier it applies to the base hand, giving it more time to scale.
Think of a simple example using only multipliers:
-
Scenario A – Bad Order (X Mult Joker on the left):
- Base Mult: 10
- Order: X2 Joker → +20 Mult Joker
- Step 1: X2 Joker (leftmost) → 10 × 2 = 20
- Step 2: +20 Mult Joker → 20 + 20 = 40
- Final Mult = 40 (yikes)
-
Scenario B – Good Order (X Mult Joker on the right):
- Base Mult: 10
- Order: +20 Mult Joker → X2 Joker
- Step 1: +20 Mult Joker → 10 + 20 = 30
- Step 2: X2 Joker → 30 × 2 = 60
- Final Mult = 60 (way better)
The difference between 40 and 60 is 50% more just from swapping the order. This becomes even more dramatic when you stack multiple Mult and X Mult Jokers!
Emm, these numbers might feel a bit boring, right? I get it! But trust me, you can totally skip all this mental math—just use my calculator like I do! Once you do, you’ll be on your way to becoming the god of Balatro.
Step 2: Placing the Foundation (Left Side)
Now, we need to ensure that +Chips and +Mult Jokers are in the correct spots for maximum value.
-
+Chips Jokers go on the far left. These are your “foundation” Jokers. Placing them here means they multiply earlier and set a bigger base for your hand:
- Blue Joker (+chips per card in deck)
- Odd Todd (+chips per odd rank)
- Stone Joker, Bull, Hiker, etc. (all “+XX Chips when…”)
-
After that, place your +Mult Jokers directly to the right of the +Chips Jokers:
- Popcorn (+Mult that decays over rounds)
- Gros Michel (+Mult, can disappear)
- Red Card, Spare Trousers, Bootstraps, etc. (all the “gains +X Mult when…” Jokers)
By stacking them this way, you create a strong base of chips that gets multiplied by the +Mult Jokers before any X Mult Jokers are added.
Step 3: The Multipliers (Right Side)
Place all X Mult Jokers on the far right—they are your “final scaling” Jokers. The last multiplier you apply to your total is the one that has the biggest effect:
- Cavendish (flat X3 Mult)
- Loyalty Card (periodic X4 Mult)
- Ramen (X2 Mult, decays with discards)
- Hologram, Constellation, Steel Joker (all gain X per specific conditions)
These Jokers should be placed last because they multiply everything that has been built up before them, maximizing the output. This is how you get those satisfying ‘ding-ding-ding’ sounds and see the fire effects on your score.
🔎 Case Study: Real-World Example (4k vs. 9k)
Let’s look at a real scenario from our calculator to prove why this matters.
In this hand (Level 3 Flush), we have the exact same lineup: Blue Joker, Cavendish (X3 Mult), Popcorn (+20 Mult), Gros Michel (+15 Mult), and Abstract Joker (+3 Mult).
The only difference? The position of Cavendish.
Scenario A: The “Rookie Mistake” (X-Mult on Left)
(Insert Image 1 Here)
- The Setup: We placed Cavendish (X3) early in the chain, right after the Blue Joker.
- The Math: It multiplies the tiny Base Mult (8) by 3, resulting in 24. Then it adds the +38 Mult from the other Jokers.
- The Result: A disappointing 4,154 score.

Scenario B: The “Pro Play” (X-Mult on Right)
(Insert Image 2 Here)
- The Setup: We dragged Cavendish to the far right.
- The Math: We let Popcorn, Gros Michel, and Abstract Joker build the Mult first (8 + 20 + 15 + 3 = 46). Then Cavendish multiplies that massive total by 3.
- The Result: A huge 9,246 score.

💡 The Verdict:
By simply moving one card to the right, we more than doubled (+122%) the score without spending a single dollar or adding a new joker. This is why you must calculate your order!
Troubleshooting: The Human Experience & Traps
⚠️ Warning: The “Blueprint” Trap
I still remember the pain of throwing a Gold Stake run on the final Boss Blind.
I had a Blueprint and a Cavendish (X3 Mult). In my haste to skip the blind, I accidentally left Blueprint on the left of my Popcorn (+20 Mult).
Instead of copying the massive X3 multiplier for exponential growth, I copied a decaying +20 mult. I lost the run by 5,000 chips.
The Lesson: Blueprint copies the Joker to its right. Always double-check that it is sitting next to your strongest X Mult generator, not a flat +Mult card.
Brainstorm Alert: Be even more careful with Brainstorm, which copies the leftmost Joker. You must control exactly which Joker is in slot #1 to ensure it clones the most valuable effect, often forcing you to rearrange your entire “Left Side” foundation.
⚠️ Warning: The Retrigger Nightmare
Things get even more complicated with Sock and Buskin or Hack, where retriggering Jokers come into play. These add a layer of complexity that’s hard to track manually.
- Misplacing these Jokers can throw off your entire math, leaving you with much less than you expected. Take your time and verify your setup using the calculator before clicking “Play”.
⚠️ The Exception: Positional Jokers “Rules are made to be broken. Jokers like Swashbuckler (adds sell value of left Jokers to Mult) or Ceremonial Dagger (destroys the Joker to the right) force you to ignore the standard Left-to-Right rule. In these cases, mechanics trump math. Always read the card text carefully!”
How to Avoid Guesswork?
Can’t do the math in your head? Don’t risk your run. Use the Balatro Drag-and-Drop Calculator to simulate your exact hand and experiment with Joker positions before you even start.
- Can’t visualize the impact? Move Jokers around in the calculator and see how the score changes.
- Unlocking the 6th slot (Antimatter)? Check our calculator to see how much it boosts your X-Mult chain before making the leap!
Look, late-game Balatro is mentally exhausting. When you have glass cards triggering, steel cards holding, and distinct jokers firing off, mental math becomes a nightmare. I built this calculator because it stops me from messing up and losing runs over bad math. Trust me, it’s a lifesaver! Give it a try—it’s free and saves your brainpower for the shop rerolls. Trust me, I’ve been there, and it’s worth it!
